New Year’s Eve, 1984… I was fourteen years old and rockin’ at my first live concert.
Little did I know this night would go down in the record books as concert of lore.
Prince and The Revolution’s Purple Rain Tour
Dallas, Texas at Reunion Arena
I remember being in awe of Sheila E’s opening act on the drums and thinking the talent couldn’t get any better. Then the real explosion of energy took over the stage when Prince made his entrance. Between the screams of thousands of fans, the mesmerizing smoke machines and the over-the-top theatrics, the whole night was surreal. Prince was like a god on stage; he sang, he danced, he played guitar, and he created a production like no other. My favorite song was “I Would Die 4 U”, and I can still see the bright lights flashing as I was overwhelmed by live music for the first time in my life.
Today I live in the self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the World” and am proud to call Austin home. Even though I never had the chance to see Prince perform a second time, I do have the opportunity to experience live music, from small scale venues to large festivals, every day of the week. My new local favorite is The American Revival, totally worth staying up late for.
