Back to School

When you think back over your school career there are probably a few teachers that really stand out for you – teachers who made a big difference in your life because of what they taught, how they taught, or because they were able to bring out the best in you. There are several teachers I remember fondly for different reasons, but of course the two teachers who made the biggest difference in my life are my mom and dad. As the child of teachers, I have nothing but respect for the work they do. Growing up, I thought it was pretty cool that my parents got all the school holidays off too, but I also know that they worked hard, brought work home, and could have earned more doing other work. Regardless, they loved what they did, and they were great at it.

A few years ago, my mom and I attended a reading of one of her former students who came through Austin on a book tour for her first published novel. The author spoke about a high school English teacher who had inspired and believed in her, then said, “and she’s here tonight!” … at which point the whole room gasped, turned toward my mom and applauded, like she was the celebrity! How often do teachers get treated like the rock stars that they are?!? Not often enough if you ask me.

That’s why I’m particularly excited about this month’s Item of Value: the opportunity to thank a teacher. Every year, especially as we head back to school, teachers dig into their own pockets to prepare themselves, their classrooms, and their students for learning. What better way to show our appreciation than with some extra help? CLICK HERE (or go to our website www.HindsiteAustin.com) to recognize your favorite teacher and enter him or her for a chance to win a gift card to use to make this the best school year ever. I have a feeling there may be some stiff competition, so share a compelling story about how this teacher has earned your esteem, gratitude and loyalty, and let us honor their service.

It’s a good life!
