The Lint that Gets Lit

A few weeks ago, on an evening walk in my neighborhood, I had to stop and do a double take – right around the corner from us a house had recently caught on fire, and the flames had engulfed the entire second story and garage.  In an instant, my mind began to race as I wondered how the fire could have started, but most importantly I wanted to know that everyone was ok.  Following the incident, a quick online search revealed that, thankfully, no one was injured in the blaze.  Regardless, I was put on notice that house fires are an incredibly real threat and this one in particular hit close to home.

Yes, house fires can be very scary.  But here’s the good news: most of the time, they are also very preventable.  With October being National Fire Prevention Month, it’s a great time to bring awareness to a not-so-obvious cause of house fires… I’m talking about lint.  Yes, that pesky substance that seems to find its way onto your black clothing.  But it doesn’t stop there – it can often be found inside your machine (and I’m not just talking about the lint trap, it can sneak past that to gather on and around the heating element) and in the dryer vent tubing that leads to the exterior of your home.  Left unchecked, this can build up in walls and attics, lurking as an unseen fire hazard.

As the Godparent of your home, I am here to get your house fire-safety ready and help make sure that you, your loved ones, and your investment are protected.  I’m recommending that you have your dryer vent cleaned out every 1-2 years as a precautionary measure and, as this month’s Item of Value, I’d like to introduce you to Fireman Dryerman, a local company run by real firefighters that will take the hassle out of clearing the lint from your dryer vent and the back of the dryer.  Who better to take care of a fire hazard in your home than an off-duty firefighter?  As an exclusive offer to Hindsite clients, they’re offering 10% off their services; just visit www.HindsiteAustin.com or call the number on this Fire Safety Tips flyer to request an appointment.

It’s a good life!
